The Land Use Academy Basic Training is now ONLINE. It is strongly recommended that any new commission or board members first complete a Basic Training courses online before pursuing training in other topics of interest.

Basic Training for Land Use Commissioners

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Doors open at 8:30 a.m.)
Location: UConn Middlesex County Extension Center, 1066 Saybrook Road, Haddam, CT 06438
Cost: $45.00 (In-person or Virtual)
Complimentary continental breakfast provided for in-person participants. 

Who should attend? Newer Land Use Commissioners or those looking for a basics refresher. Recommended by the CT Office of Policy and Management (OPM) to meet 3 hours of commissioner training requirements.

    • Legal Basis for Land Use Regulation
    • Types of Power for Land Use Commissions
    • Types of Application: Zone Change and Regulation Amendments v. Special Permit v. Site Plan v. Variances
    • Meeting Decorum and Responsibilities/Fundamental Fairness

Map Reading and Mapping Resources for Land Use Commissioners

Three or more (3+) general commissioner training hours and one (1) hour of commissioner training in Fair and Affordable Housing Practices as required under the CGS 8-4c.
