Maps on the Web

Creating Feature-Rich Web Maps with ArcGIS Online

March 21-22, Asheville, NC

This one-day training introduces students to the basics of creating mapping "mashups" - interactive, online maps using free tools from Esri's new ArcGIS Online website. For communities, researchers, and outreach educators, a web map is a powerful tool for soliciting input, getting the message out, and localizing seemingly abstract data. Google Earth and Google Maps have led this revolution in online maps by making it easy for practically anyone (even you) to create a custom web map of their own. But Google isn’t the only game in town. Esri, the creator of the most popular desktop GIS software, has recently launched ArcGIS Online - a more robust online mapping tool that doesn't sacrificing ease of use or cost (it’s free!).

The workshop consists of a series of brief lectures followed by extensive hands-on exercises with “over the shoulder” advice and assistance from the teaching team. Topics covered will include:

If you have time, we encourage you to explore before the workshop.

The workshop is BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop).  Your laptop must have a wireless card that allows you to connect to a wireless network.
