Statewide Land Cover

Land cover maps for the years 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2002 have been developed. As the name implies, land cover shows the "covering" of the landscape, as opposed to land use, a term that refers to what is practiced, permitted or intended for a given area (such as zoning designations). Land cover information was derived through analyses of satellite-based remote sensing images (see About this Project). Several different ways to explore the maps, and the data behind them, are provided below. During 2004, CLEAR will be using the data to derive urban growth maps, forest fragmentation maps, and impervious surface maps - the results of which will also be posted on this site.
