Curious Trends: Other Grasses and Agriculture Grows
Example: Gain of Other Grasses and Agriculture due to New Development
Salem, CT
This area of Salem shows several things. A is a typical example of a conversion from forest to other grasses as development occurs. As is evident from the high resolution image, forest has been cleared for houses to be built. Often grass grows on the cleared areas before and during construction.
B shows a residential development with large yards and few trees that was classified as other grasses. Although this is a classification error, it is a typical occurrence when using moderate resolution satellite imagery (see understanding 30-meter resolution for more information). Because the houses are small compared to a satellite pixel, they are missed.
