Curious Trends: Turf and Grass in a Steady State
Example: Change of Turf and Grass to Other Grasses because grass grows!
Windham Airport, Windham, CT
Generally, the turf and grass class contains grasses that are mowed, manicured and shorter than grasses contained in the other grasses and agriculture class. Notice in the land cover images below that the grassy areas surrounding the runway (evident as the red x) are turf and grass in 1995 and other grasses in 2002. This change can probably be attributed to the fact that grass grows! If the grass had been mowed recently as was probably the case in 1995, it would be classified as turf and grass. If the grass had grown to be more like a meadow as was probably the case in 2002, it would be classified as other grasses. The change evident below is likely an artifact due to the date of satellite image capture compared to the airport mowing schedule.
