The Core Forest was derived from the 2006 land cover using the Landscape Fragmentation Tool. http://clear.uconn.edu/tools/lft/lft2/

The tool identifies forest area and separates them into one of four classes: 1) patch, 2) edge, 3) perforated, 4) interior or core. Visit http://clear.uconn.edu/tools/lft/lft2/method.html for a description of each class. In the Habitats map, just those areas following in the interior or core class are displayed. They are divided up into three size classes: 1) less than 250 acres, 2) between 250 and 500 acres, and 3) greater than 500 acres.
