2/08 - Statewide NAIP imagery to be acquired in summer 2008

2/08 - 2008 NAIP imagery

Due to the support of a number of State Agencies and the University of Connecticut, the state is in line to obtain complete statewide digital airborne imagery later in the summer of 2008. The imagery will be acuired as part of the USDA Farm Service Agency's National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). Under this program imagery periodically is collected throughout the US for use by the state offices of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to assess farm activity within each state. Image acuisition is coordinated by the FSA's Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO) in Utah. This year plans were to aquire imagery in Connecticut only for those areas with active agriculture which would have ommitted 37 USGS quarter quads of coverage. However, through the efforts of the GTP and on behalf of the Connecticut Geospatial Council, the state was able to pool resources to cost-share program costs with APFO. As a result, Connecticut will receive complete statewide coverage which will consist of both color and color-infrared leaf-on GeoTiff imagery at 1-meter ground resolution. Imagery will be orthorectified and will be organized by USGS quarter quads (tiles that are 3.75 minutes of latitude by 3.75 minutes of longitude.) Plans are to capture the imagery sometime between July 1 and August 30, 2008.

Thanks are due the following for contributing funding to this effort: Connecticut Siting Council, Dept. of Agriculture, Dept. of Environmental Protection, Dept. of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Dept. of Public Safety, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, UConn College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and UConn Center for land Use Education and Research.
