National Hydrography Dataset

The USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a comprehensive, feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. These uniquely identified "reaches" provide the framework for linking water-related data to the NHD surface water network.

The image below depicts the 1:24,000 high-resolution NHD drainage network within Connecticut's HUC12 watersheds.

NHD Watershed Statistics:
Number of WBD HUC12 watersheds - 240
Average size of watershed - 33.3 square miles
Average length of stream - 81 miles
Average stream density - 2.5 miles stream per square mile
Average number of stream crossings - 161
Average stream crossing density - 5.2 crossings per square mile
