National Datasets

These web pages were created by the National NEMO and Connecticut NEMO staff. This is by no way a comprehensive or exhaustive list, and, because web sites are dynamic and always changing, some links and instructions may become invalid. Land Cover
Coastal Change and Analysis Program (C-CAP)
C-CAP is a national effort to develop and distribute regional land cover and change analysis data for the coastal zone by using remote sensing technology.

Multi-Resolution Landscape Charactorization (MRLC) National Land Cover Data (NLCD)
NLCD is the first national land-cover data set produced since the early 1970s. Data for the conterminous United States circa 1992, which were derived from Landsat-5 TM images are complete and currently available for download.

Soils
Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO)
SSURGO is the most detailed level of soil mapping done by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

State Soil Geographic Database (STATSGO)
Soil maps for the STATSGO database are made by generalizing the detailed soil survey data. States have been joined as one complete seamless database to form seamless coverage.

Water Resources
Hydrologic Unit Maps (HUC)
The United States is divided and sub-divided into successively smaller hydrologic units that are classified into four levels: regions, sub-regions, accounting units, and cataloging units (also called watersheds). The hydrologic units are arranged within each other, from the smallest (cataloging units) to the largest (regions).

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD)
The National Hydrography Dataset is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that contains information about surface water features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, springs and wells.

National Wetlands Inventory (NWI)
The National Wetlands Inventory of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service produces information on the characteristics, extent, and status of the Nation's wetlands and deepwater habitats.

Waterbodies
This is a coarse portrayal of the streams and waterbodies of the United States.

Unique and Fragile
Flood Maps
Digital Q3 Flood Data: The digital Q3 Flood Data are designed to provide guidance and a general proximity of the location of Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Coastal Barrier Resource Area (CBRA) Q3: Coastal barriers are unique landforms that provide protection for diverse aquatic habitats and serve as the mainland's first line of defense against the impacts of coastal storms and erosion.

Other Useful Data
National Elevation Dataset (NED)
A seamless, raster elevation dataset that is available across the U.S.

North American Landscape Characterization (NALC) Satellite Imagery
The NALC dataset is comprised of hundreds of triplicates (i.e., remotely-sensed multispectral scanner (MSS) data acquired in the years 1973, 1986, and 1991 plus or minus 1 year, thus, the name triplicate) including a Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
