GPS Class - what you need to know

Class starts at 9:00 and generally concludes around 4:30.

Parking in Haddam is in the Extension Center's parking lot; parking in Storrs is permitted only along Horsebarn Hill Road - NOT behind the WB Young Building.

The class involves a fair amount of time outside learning how to operate a Garmin GPS Map76 receiver. Students should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring raingear if the forecast indicates anything other than complete sunshine. The GPS receivers are waterproof - so we go outside rain or shine.

If you own a digital camera and have a USB cable to connect it to a computer, you should plan to bring them. Part of the course focuses on integrating field photographs with GPS field locations and displaying these data in a GIS. Using your own gear will help make it easier for you to replicate this process after the class.

We also ask that you plan to bring your lunch if at all possible. While there are some nearby places to grab a lunch, we try to keep lunch to 30 - 45 minutes, which is not a lot of time to get your car, drive, order, pay, eat and return.

Check list of things to remember:

  1. Comfortable all-weather shoes
  2. Raingear if the forecast is so-so
  3. Lunch
  4. Digital camera and USB cable if available
  5. Enthusiasm
